Product design standards
The European Alliance for SMC BMC has defined six SMC and BMC standard product profiles, which provide you with a good flavor of the materials’ performance and physical properties.
| Product design standard | Fiber | Filler | Density (g/cm3) | Shrinkage (%) | Flex Strength (MPa) | Flex Modulus (GPa) | Tensile strength (MPa) | Tensile Modulus (GPa) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SMC Class A UP | 30% glass | 43% CaCO3 | 1.93 | -0.10 | 180 | 10 | 75 | 10 |
| SMC Low Density Class A UP | 25% glass | 30% CaCO3 | 1.30 | -0.10 | 190 | 10 | 85 | 9 |
| SMC V0 3mm UP (UL94) | 25% glass | 37% ATH, 7% CaCO3 | 1.79 | +0.08 | 160 | 10.5 | 70 | 9.5 |
| SMC Structural UP | 40% glass | 34% CaCO3 | 1.88 | +0.01 | 300 | 15 | 140 | 14 |
| SMC Structural Carbon VE | 50% carbon | none | 1.38 | -0.05 to -0.10 | 300 | 25 | 180 | 25.5 |
| BMC V0 3mm UP (UL94) | 20% glass | 50% ATH | 1.76 | +0.15 | 85 | 8.5 | 30 | 9 |
The materials standards have been evaluated by Moldex 3D for creating detailed design files, with information about material flow (reactive viscosity, cure kinetics, heat capacity), warpage (relaxation modulus), and PVT-C dependency (Pressure-Volume-Temperature). This information is available in .mtx format for easy upload into your design software.
These will help you as designer to simulate flow and cure of SMC and BMC, and will be of great help for effectively designing components in these versatile and lightweight materials.
These product profiles proposed by the European Alliance for SMC BMC are designated as follows (as per ISO 11469 nomenclature):
- EA Standard SMC Class A UP (GF30+KD43)
- EA Standard SMC Low Density Class A UP (GF25+KD30)
- EA Standard SMC V0 3mm UP (GF25+DD37)
- EA Standard SMC Structural UP (GF40+KD34)
- EA Standard SMC Structural Carbon VE (CF50)
- EA Standard BMC V0 3mm UP (GF20+DD50)
Abbreviations used
- UP = Unsaturated Polyester
- VE = Vinyl Ester
- GF = Glass fiber reinforcement
- CF = Carbon fiber reinforcement
