The decklid of the new Mercedes CL (S Classe Coupé) is made out of 3 different parts (outer skin, vertical wall & inner reinforcement). After moulding the 3 parts are bonded together.

Daimler has selected a LD SMC with optimized VOC emission to match the targeted weight reduction at lower investment and processing cost.
The use of LD SMC also allows Daimler to hidden antennas inside the decklid as well to reduce the VOC emissions.
The unique design freedom delivered by SMC has allowed Daimler to significantly reduce the number of original metal parts with the subsequent reduction of investment cost and process simplification.
On-line painting is also contributing to the overall efficiency.
